if i could i would

last weekend i was going through my denims so i can have them tapered into ’skinny jeans’. i don’t wear jeans in the office anyway, so i thought i’d save by recycling my old pairs, at least i know the fit’s tested. the bigger concern is that, should the style deem unfit for my body type, or rather my body’s unfit for them, it wouldn’t be such a waste of money.

anyway, i went to a tailor yesterday to find out how much tapering would cost, the lady oh-so-casually said, “it’ll be $28″. as she said that i thought, mother-effin-god, eh trenta pesos lang yan sa manila! goodness. sometimes i still can’t get over how much they charge for labor here. like with the mani-pedi treatments, i only get them when there’s an occasion. other than that when the fall season kicks in, my toes will not see the light of the day until spring’s around the corner. once i mentioned to my sister the cost of those treatments here, and she replied, ‘kaya pala kung magpamanicure ka dito, halos every other day.’ so now that it’s getting a little nippy this side of the world, hello pasty, cuticley nails.

haircut is another issue. a few years ago, a college friend gave me one of those free hairstyling flyers randomly given on the streets. we went to this salon thinking we’d get freebies, not knowing that people who work there are vultures! vultures i tell you! they convinced us that we needed highlights, hair conditioners, etc. taking advantage of our umm, inner self-absorption. after they finally finished off with us, what’s left of my what-could’ve-been-nice-dinner allowance was $7, barely enough to get myself a whitecastle cheeseburger.

one time, J told me about a new lady working as a machine operator at their site. she basically gets on those caterpillar thingamajigs, turns the wheel a bit to the left and right, flicks it on and off, and then she’s done. oh, and she’s getting paid $50 per hour. craptastic. something tells me i’m in the wrong profession.

gaahd $50/hour??? nakahanap na yata ako ng possible career. :D

i hear you. for a $30 pedicure here, in pinas i would already have had a (heavenly) foot spa, plus a manicure, plus hot oil treatment for my hair, possibly even a massage, and i could even throw in threading for my wayward eyebrows in there. kaya when i’m in pinas, my hubby can’t fault me for splurging, kasi when we convert it, para pa rin akong nagtipid *grin*. analysis ni hubby, kapag summer daw we use those $2 flipflops, thinking that naka-save tayo as opposed to buying fall and winter footwear. pero with the flipflops naman comes the need for pedicures all throughout summer, which if summed up could be worth a pair or two of boots na rin! bili na lang daw ako ng isang pair ng magandang sapatos para itago yung mga kuko ko, sa buong taon mas tipid kami. :D

also, your post explains why i have long hair, hehehe.

oo! grabe nga eh, it’s not rocket science pero shet naman diba?

ay may point nga si allan ano, hehe. eh ano ginawa mo ba naman? :)

since yung buhok ko ngayon gusto ko yung may bangs chorva, pinagugupit ko. pero pag kelangan na i-trim ako na lang, sakit sa bulsa kung after 5 minutes lang of them cutting your hair, you shell out at least $40 plus tip pa.

abby!!!!! you always crack me up everytime i visit. that mani/pedi comment about the pasty cuticley toes *nodding hysterically*. love it!

on hair, happily, my last cut lasted 3 WHOLE months — exactly what my stylist predicted (and thank God ha, hair prices are CRAZY!!!!). eric isn’t fussy like me so he swears by Super Clips.. and i don’t know how or why.. but he made me try them once. i wanted to cry. then i wanted to kill someone. i’ll take the vultures over Super Clips anyday! hands down!!!!!!

hooked you up on my site. hope everything’s dandy with you and J. (haaaayyyy, i still remember the immigration shit we were dealing with back in the days. damn, still feels like yesterday!).

i miss manila salon prices!!! kainis no, you throw away at least $40 for a so-so haircut pero sa manila, good salon na yung worth nun plus manicure pa!

hay. skinny jeans. please, please let it be over. LOL.

JENN: tell me about it man, thank god those days are long gone!!
hahaa, natawa naman ako sa super clips story mo. then again you’re right, getting a hair cut from them is like getting a haircut from your grandma who has ZERO experience. feels like they’d take a bunch of your hair and just cutting it straight across. walang style!!

J is more tipid. he bought this razor for $14 april 2005, and he refuses to throw it away kahit medyo palyado na yung blade! that’s more than a year of savings!!

PIA: haay, sinabi mo! you know what i hate with the mani-pedi here pa, expensive na nga, parang you don’t get your money’s worth pa, dahil hindi thorough ang linis nila!
hehe.

it’ll be over before we know it. hotdawg, i’ve got a feeling i’d look like a frog with them on- wide hips and thighs, tas skinny on the bottom. YIKES. :)

yung isang tita ko, she went to london to visit my cousin and ended earning mucho because she knows how to cut hair, mani and pedi, and the pinoy all lined up para magpa-service! hmm, this may be my ticket to a job abroad? ang mahal ng fees dyan, grabe! kaya uwi ka na and let’s have a salon date!!! panalo yon!

came across your site meeyagirl’s! wow! v. cool and i can’t believe i haven’t blog-hopped here before!

i heart NYC and i consider myself an NYC girl even though i now live in *insert-joke-here* NJ. hell, as long as my family’s still in NYC, right?

yes, citylife is expensive. i have a cousin who just moved here from the philippines and she can’t believe that mixed drinks here are $12 on average and that real estate prices are over the moon!

and kudos to you for being able to wear skinny jeans!!

hey kat!

i bloghopped through your site from toni’s a little over a week ago too, so, hello there, and thanks for visiting!!

between you and me though, i try to check out the ladies who wear skinnies, i’m trying to see how i can pull ‘em off and look even half as good as the others, hehe. :D
